Student Council

The Student Council is a great opportunity for pupils to get involved in the running of the school. It is made up of representatives from each year group.  These representatives are elected in September by the students and, along with the Head Boy and Girl, act as the official voice of all the students.  The Council discusses and decides on things that matter to the students and are important for the whole school.

The Council meet regularly (every two/three weeks).

Why do we have a School Council?

• A School Council benefits the whole school
• It gives students the chance to express their views
• Students can have an input on important decisions
• Students can develop confidence and communication skills

Aims of the Council:

• To represent the student body
• To gather the views of students about improving the school
• To present proposals to other key groups within our community, including: the Leadership Team, Governors, Teachers, the Site Team, Catering Team,
• To publicise the role and work of the council in order to raise awareness
• To help organise/participate in events in school which are linked to these aims, such as: assemblies, whole school events like the sponsored walk, social functions
• To organise the election for head students each year, including interviewing potential candidates and short-listing those who will go forward to the Hustings, running the election process and counting the votes.

Rules and regulations

The Council agrees a set of rules called the Terms of Reference.

What has the School Council done?

• Led the campaign for the relocation of the Sixth form centre
• Contributed to the School Rewards policy
• Decides which charities are supported by the whole school on the sponsored walk
• Decides which charities are supported by whole school fundraising
• Provided advice on the introduction of cashless catering
• Provided advice on the bids for the catering contract
• Met with politicians and inspectors when they have visited the school
• Requested sheltered seating in the lower playground
• Introduced the Student Well-Being Team
• Is currently promoting a campaign to improve recycling within the school

Who would make a good school councillor?

Someone who has the following qualities:

• A team player
• Interested to learn more about our school
• Keen to make a contribution to improving our school
• Able to represent the views of others in your year group
• Able and willing to speak to your year group at assembly about the Council?
• Willing to give up some of your own time to this post
• Has lots of good ideas
• Sets a good example to others
• A good listener and speaker

• It is a great opportunity to have your say and help direct the way the school goes.
